I index trade books, scholarly publications, and textbooks in a wide variety of subject areas, from the humanities and social sciences to biomedical sciences.

I’ve completed training from the American Society for Indexing (ASI) and undertaken specialized training in medical indexing and medical terminology.

I also have a personal interest in fiber arts and DIY, biography and memoir, horticulture, psychology, history, linguistics, disability studies, and French-language materials.

The indexes I write can be submitted to the publisher in whatever format you need, separate or embedded. I'm skilled at creating embedded indexes in formats including but not limited to Word, InDesign, XML, and ePub.

Recent Testimonials

From Laura Stanfill, Publisher at Forest Avenue Press:

An index! It's like Alyssa decoded my brain and organized it in a way that I could never in a million years see from the inside of the chaos. She is professional, responsive, deadline-oriented, and an absolute delight.

From Gabrielle Harris, author of Lessons in Meditation (2025) from Luminary Press:

Just a quick note to say a heartfelt thank you for your beautiful work on the index. I'm really impressed by how thoroughly and thoughtfully you gathered the themes — it has created such an accessible, teacher-friendly resource, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

I can also see the level of research and care that went into this. The cross-referencing, the way the themes are grouped, and the balance across all sections show such attention to detail. No entry feels sparse, which I know must be incredibly challenging to achieve from your end. The whole index reads as clear, polished, and genuinely usable.

My rates are competitive with industry standards.

The exact rate depends on the complexity and density of indexing required (trade books cost less than scholarly works; scholarly works cost less than medical textbooks, for example). For that reason, I do need to see a draft of your book to be able to provide an accurate estimate.

To request an estimate, please contact me using the form below, which prompts you to provide:

  • Your book's topic and intended audience

  • Estimated word count

  • A draft of your book (or two sample chapters)

  • Projected timeline

  • Any questions

I will get back to you as soon as possible with a quote and any follow-up questions.

And if I'm not able to take on your project, I will help you find a professional indexer who can!
